Candles

The Latin word "candere" means to flicker.

According to Wikipedia, a candle is a source of light and sometimes a source of heat consisting of a solid block of fuel (commonly wax) and an embedded wick.

As the mass of solid fuel is melted and consumed, the candle grows shorter. Portions of the wick that are not evaporating the liquid fuel are consumed in the flame. The incineration of the wick limits the exposed length of the wick, thus maintaining a constant burning temperature and rate of fuel consumption.

OK, that’s the information bit now let’s see what we can find with the Interior Design Team!

INTO THE WORLD OF COPPER FOIL

When I disappear from cyberspace it is most often due to delving into my art world. I've been busy foiling hundreds of pieces for three of my most recent projects. After I was done I tossed the roll of foil and here is where it landed! I thought it was an appropriate expression of how I felt at the moment. It's SUCH a process but one that I love. I remember asking...what is the Tiffany style of stained glass? I know the answer now! After each piece of the pattern is cut and the edges ground smooth, each is wash and dried and then lined with copper foil. There are different widths, and backing types. The one pictured here is the thinnest (hardest) to work with. The foil is then burnished on the edges and THIS element is what is soldered together; the foil pieces. Burnishes is a very important step.
I could go on but there are many online places to get the information. I wanted to share a little of my process along with a picture just for fun! I've made great progress the past few days and should be listing some new pieces along with finishing a consignment project by weeks end! Here is hoping that you are able to make the most of your day!

Lisa Boots: Etsy Artist from Indiana

If you ever thought you'd like to have a stained glass window on your bed, Lisa Boots is the woman you need to talk to. She makes quilts that look like stained glass. Seriously, this is some cool stuff... but you probably wouldn't really want to put these beautiful creations on your bed. Hang one on a wall and watch your friends stare in amazement.

Lisa is from Lafayette, Indiana, the sister city to West Lafayette, the home of Purdue University. I'm fairly certain I didn't know where Purdue was located before, but now I know it's located near a wonderful artist.  And here's what she has to say:

1. What is your shop name and what do you sell?

Light and Reflection is the name of my shop.  I make pieces in fabric that look like stained glass windows. I also have a website which is www.lisaboots.com.

2. What long series of events led to you doing this?

I have enjoyed various forms of needlework for as long as I can remember, and started quilting as an expectant mom twenty-three years ago. Fifteen years later, I made a college visit with that beautiful daughter. The date coincidentally fell on the same weekend of a large quilt show in the town where we were staying.

I saw some pieces there that later inspired the technique I ultimately developed.  Attempts were being made at the idea of quilted stained glass designs but they had what I call a "cutesier" and "quiltier" kind of feeling.

I wanted to make pieces that could be mistaken for actual stained glass windows.  During my first gallery opening in 2003, I saw a couple looking at my work and realized that they were quietly arguing.  Hung fairly high and out of reach, he was pointing at the work saying he thought they were fabric.  She was shaking her head to disagree, because she thought they had to be glass.

I remember thinking  "OK I did it!"

3. Who taught you the particular skills you use in your work?

I am self taught as a quilter and developed my own technique for the stained glass pieces.

4. When did you start selling your work?

I sold my first piece from the gallery about a month before the opening and another that night. From that point I have enjoyed more sales there as well as commission placements and now the opportunity for online sales with Etsy.

5. What is your favorite thing about your online shop?

I just really like the freedom and flexibility the Etsy format offers to create the shop and feature the pieces.  I have often said that I am "techno-challenged", but I was able to put the shop together with relative ease.

6. What is your favorite thing about what you sell?

First, it would be the "trompe l'oeil" or "fool the eye" effect of what I do.  Then there is the fact that I am a self proclaimed color freak .  I love the saturation and range of colors in the fabrics and the way the mottled black "lead came" makes them pop.

7. What is your favorite item in your own shop and why?

Wow, this is hard.  It is a bit like choosing between your children (and I only have  one).  I guess  "Fire Dancer" for the intense colors and the detail in the headpiece.

8. What teams do you belong to and what do you like most about them?

I am totally new to the team thing, but I was invited to join Design Style Guide and I am thrilled with the connection to other artists and the endless possibilities of promotion from the site.

9. What is the most fun thing you do to promote your shop?

Right now I am just enjoying looking at other shops and seeing how they are set up, and of course I love looking at the incredible art that people are producing.

10. What are some of your favorite finds by other online sellers?

Well of course I love everything fiber and I love "Diana's Mosaic Photo Art Quilts."

And I am really in awe of "Mysticsilks'" silk paintings.  But honestly, I have only scratched the surface of the amazing work offered [by Design Style Guide].

11. What do you do in your spare time?

Spare time??????  You are kidding, right?  Actually, my basic every day chores like grocery shopping, house cleaning, laundry... these are what I think of as work.

Pretty much every other waking moment is spent doing what I love... making my art.  Of course a large part of my process is the hand stitching of the "lead came" and I do some of that while watching TV with my hubby.  We love the various crime dramas that are so popular now.

12. Do you have anything else you would like to share?

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that has welcomed me to the team, or chosen one of my pieces for a treasury, and especially to Jay who has helped me in the techno-challenged department and offered to do this interview for the blog!

Not a problem, Lisa. I'm happy to help, and we're happy to have you on our team.

Cardinals

A couple of years ago I spent sometime in North Carolina visiting with members of our family.  We had a wonderful time and one of the lasting memories that I came away with was the sight of a wonderful red bird called a Cardinal.  The Cardinal, I was to learn, is the mascot for North Carolina. Join me here in discovering these beautiful works of art!

Our Interview with Nonnie's Treasures

"Four Seasons Stained Glass ACEOS"
Who are you? I am a wife and mother of two grown children, working full time at my “day job,” counting the days to retirement.

Where are you located?
My husband and I live in Danville, PA, which is about two hours north of the state capitol, Harrisburg.

What do you create? I create all kinds of stained glass. I am fascinated by color and light, and I love designing and making lamps, lanterns, panels, ACEOs, boxes, windows, and just about anything that you can imagine. Just like painting, it’s another medium of expression to me.

Where do you sell your creations? I sell exclusively through my etsy shop, which is http://nonnie60.etsy.com

"Sophisticated Lady Stained Glass Panel"

Where do you create? I am always creating in my mind, every minute of the day. Ideas come to me when I’m at work, when I’m working on a piece, and even when I’m sleeping! My husband built me a wonderful workshop in our basement with lots of room for building the stained glass pieces, and lots of storage space for my glass sheets.

What inspires you? I am inspired by nature – flowers, the beach, birds, animals. Music inspires me a lot of the time, as does classical paintings. I recreated “Girl With a Pearl Earring” in an 18” x 22” panel for my daughter, as that is her favorite painting.

Is your Etsy shop a full-time job, part-time job, or hobby? Since I am still working full-time, my etsy shop has to be part-time for now.

What type of marketing is the most effective for you? I leave business cards in restaurants, salons, and wherever I happen to be that other people will visit. I promote my business to antique dealers, gift shops, and friends. The most effective marketing happens to be appearing in a Treasury, so I try to promote our group as much as possible. I also have posted photos of my work on flickr, which surprisingly reaches a lot of people.

"Butterfly Stained Glass Box"

What are your goals? My goal is to retire from work in a year, do stained glass pieces full-time, and take examples of my work “on the road” at higher end craft and art shows.

How do you envision your creations being used by your customers? I envision someone asking me to create a custom piece which has a significance in their life, and enjoying it for the rest of their life.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us? Yes. You have no idea what you can do until you try. I always wanted to excel at one thing, but I never thought I was very good at anything in the field of art. When I took a course three years ago in basic stained glass, I was hooked, and now I can’t NOT do stained glass. I am driven to do it because I love it and it gives me personal satisfaction, plus, I'm learning more all the time.

Our Interview with Laurie Beggin

Who are you?

Laurie Beggin, Stained glass artist for The Looking Glass

Where are you located?

Warrensburg, Illinois

What do you create?

Stained glass panels, free formed pieces, mosaics and glass applique' antique windows.

Where do you sell your creations?

Etsy at http://www.27lauriebethbeggin.etsy.com

Where do you create?

In my studios at The Olde Farmhouse (our farmette)

What inspires you?

Nature that surrounds me, beautiful stained glass windows in churchs, stained glass windows in turn-of-the-century homes

Is your Etsy shop a full-time job, part-time job, or hobby?

Full FULL time!

What type of marketing is the most effective for you?

My blog
Marmalade Pink
Wickedly Chic
Merchant Circle
Project Wonderful!

I also cannot stress enough how vital it is for members of this group to go to each members website, copy their URL and link it to their blog site if they have one. It takes a lot of time, and it's boring to do but if this collective group does it, it will raise our internet rating, increase each members pages viewed and by doing that increase our sales. It is so important and it is one thing that I've noticed very few members are doing.

What do you do when you are not creating?

I am a master gardener and I love taking pictures and share them on my blog.

What role does creativity play in your marketing methods?

So far I'm bare-bones with my marketing. I need to immerse myself in the strategies, demographics and internet options but it's been hard for me to "enjoy" that aspect of my business. Pam at PassItOnPlates has been a huge help!

What are your goals?

I would like to make a steady income that matches the salary I made when I worked as a Realtor and a "Legal Assistant" at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Okay, to be honest, I'd like to make MORE money than that!!!

How do you envision your creations being used by your customers?

I want my creations to be treasured and cared for in their new homes. I hope that the pieces are handed down through the family members. That is one of the wonderful features of Stained Glass. If taken care of property, it is timeless!

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Sure, I'll share my quotes that inspire me...here yah go!

Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a different way to stand.

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious...the fundemental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and science." Albert Einstein Philosophy
A human being is a part of the whole, called by us, "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security. – Albert Einstein

Room With A View - Mosaic Art

Mosaic art is the art of the ages, one of the world's oldest art forms. Mosaics may consist of pieces of broken china, glass, tile, and various dimensional findings such as marbles, buttons, pebbles, beads, figurines...well, you get the idea. Mosaics add texture, depth, color, movement, style, personality, and shape to a room - in one appealing package. Shown below are some of my favorites.

Yellow Flower by Art de Fleur

Luscious, rich color medley. I love the contrast of the curved shapes created with the geometric triangle tiles of stained glass.

Circles and Swirls Clock by Kut and Paste

Themes of time and the moving universe beautifully combined in complimentary shades of lavender and green stained glass.

Carribean Breeze Diptych by Artful Mosaics by Dana

Sea, shore, inland, and sky artfully melded in this wall duo. The artist's handmade ceramic 3d beach tiles add perfect texture and drama.

Make Art Not War by artsy Rubbish

A little bit retro, a little bit rock 'n' roll, and a whole lotta graphic style goin' on!

Tree by the Sea by Godwin's Enterprises

A stained glass painting. The depiction of the tree above and flora below is a study in appealing contrast.

Intersection at Twilight by biolum glass

Mauvelously Mod. Enough said.

Sky Blue Box by Dias y Flores

Dimension, texture, and color for the tabletop.

China Mosaic End Table by Grindstone Mountain Mosaics

Function, form, and cottage rose perfection!
