Is it Spring Yet?

Atlas Signs and Plaques

by Atlas Signs and Plaques

Well… it sure doesn’t feel like spring! A touch of snow yesterday, freezing fog this morning… wow! Around here, Presidents Day weekend is the time for pruning my roses. I haven’t done it yet, because of the unusually cold weather, but it’s time to get out into the garden and start working.

Though I’ll be working with my coat and hat on… it does make me feel like spring and garden weather is just around the corner. So I went searching on our website designstyleguide.net to see what I could find in the garden decor section.

What I found made me yearn even more for spring!!!!

Putting on my hat and coat and gloves and heading out to the garden! I’m sure I’ll find a few signs of spring out there! *smile*

Sage and Beige

A few weeks ago when I was feeling the winter blahs, I purchased a few new afforable home accessories in shades of sage green, brown and beige. They gave my living room a refreshing early Spring woodland feeling. I found these items on Design Style Guide that would fit in just perfectly. Neutral without the boring factor!

Springtime

It is around this time of year, when winter has overstayed its welcome, that I begin longing for spring. I impatiently wait for spring rain showers and low, rumbling thunderstorms; for trees to unfurl their greenery and flowers to bloom and bring some color back to the landscape; for birds to return and fill the air with their playful song, signaling the warmer, lazier days to come.

Be sure to click on the captions and visit the etsy shops of these very talented artists. And there is music involved, so if you happen to be viewing this at work, you may want to adjust your volume accordingly before clicking on the play button. Enjoy!

Janet Holson-Mazzer: Etsy Artist from Canada

Janet Holson-Mazzer is a potter. This is fascinating to me because the best I could ever do with clay was to make a really big mess. What she does is most certainly not a mess. See what you think...

1. What is your shop name and what do you sell?

My shop name is Janson Pottery. I sell handmade porcelain and stoneware pottery and tiles. [My work] can also be found at www.jansonpottery.com and www.craft.on.ca/portfolio/JanetHolson-Mazzer .

2. What long series of events led to you doing this?

I went back to school as a mature student part-time and then decided to take a full time Ceramic Art and Design program because it had always been a dream of mine to work in clay. I had taken ceramics programs in high school and knew that one day, I would return to the medium that I was so passionate about. Most of the time, this passion leaves me feeling in awe of life.

3. Who taught you the particular skills you use in your work?

I went to George Brown College in Toronto, Ontario and since graduating from the Ceramics Art and Design program, I have done many workshops, gone to lectures, and courses as well.

4. When did you start selling on Etsy?

November 13, 2008

5. What is your favorite thing about Etsy?

My favourite thing about Etsy is the diversity of mediums and styles of work. I also love the forums, what I have learned about business promotion and how to take better photos.

6. What is your favorite thing about what you sell?

I love to look at my work and know that others will love it the way that I do. I also really appreciate feedback.

7. What is your favorite item in your own shop and why?

It's hard for me to choose because I love everything. If I had to narrow it down, it would be the tiles. A number of them are pressed with wildflowers and it reminds me of spring and [not being] snowed in all of the time.

8. What teams do you belong to and what do you like most about them?

I belong to Design Style Guide and the Etsy Mud Team. I like that they have both been great places for learning, sharing and feedback.

9. What is the most fun thing you do to promote your shop?

Getting out to shows and meeting people as well as educating them about what I do.

10. What are some of your favorite finds by other sellers on Etsy?

I love Rob Eastman's photos, as well as My Two Seasons because I like scrapbooking when I have time. I also really like Clay By Day

11. What do you do in your spare time?

I love spending time with my family, travelling, having quiet time for reflection, photography, reading and taking care of our pets.

12. Do you have anything else you would like to share?

Thank you so much for interviewing me and visiting my shop. I really appreciate it.

You are most welcome!

Silk Paintings by Mystic Silks

I have to admit that I was kinda nervous about writing todays' blog.
I had no idea what I was going to write about. First I read some
of the latest posts on this blog. Wonderful and interesting posts,
by the way. Make sure you read them.
Then I started looking through the spectacular work of our artists
on Design Style Guide, and inspiration came when I came across Mystic Silks
gorgeous silk paintings.
MYSTIC SILKS creates unique silk art: Art work that can not be duplicated---
one of a kind hand painted silk pieces.
"As the colored dyes touch the silk, moving through the fibers,
they take on a wonderful, mysterious life of their own.
A steaming process, sets the dyes, adding other dimensions and character. I
f you look closely you may see mysterious shapes and images."
This one is called Her Majesty, the Monarch
A Monarch butterfly emerging from its cocoon.

This one is entitled Einstein
"I love Albert, and this silk painting is a mere attempt at capturing the abstract complex thinking of Albert Einstein. It consists of symbols: hexagongs, squares, circles, and various images that appear four dimensional."

Mystic Silks calls this one Fickle Winds

Mystic Silks bio reads:
"I have enjoyed the skill of silk painting for several years, and have exhibited my creations at juried and invitational art shows. Each creation is unique.
I truly began silk art as a form of relaxation, however my Virgo personality controls the need to reach a level of perfection. Each silk creation, was a labor of love and dedication to get that certain unique appearance.Because of the steaming process my silk paintings have images that appear, if you look closely you'll see them. Look at " BlueBird Garden" Between the statue's stump, and the rose bushes you'll see the images of a man and woman.
When it comes to wearing a silk scarf I like to wear something that no one else has seen. I believe everyone has the desire to feel 'unique', special, one of a kind. And so, when I say this was created, just for you, believe it! Each hand designed item is inspired by some muse: It could be the music I'm listening to, or a photo of something I've taken of nature. From butterlfies emerging from their cocoons, to a wee flower found on the floor of a forest. It might be an exotic mood I'm in; I have to paint it on silk. The imagination is a wonderful gift of the universe."

Lisa Boots: Etsy Artist from Indiana

If you ever thought you'd like to have a stained glass window on your bed, Lisa Boots is the woman you need to talk to. She makes quilts that look like stained glass. Seriously, this is some cool stuff... but you probably wouldn't really want to put these beautiful creations on your bed. Hang one on a wall and watch your friends stare in amazement.

Lisa is from Lafayette, Indiana, the sister city to West Lafayette, the home of Purdue University. I'm fairly certain I didn't know where Purdue was located before, but now I know it's located near a wonderful artist.  And here's what she has to say:

1. What is your shop name and what do you sell?

Light and Reflection is the name of my shop.  I make pieces in fabric that look like stained glass windows. I also have a website which is www.lisaboots.com.

2. What long series of events led to you doing this?

I have enjoyed various forms of needlework for as long as I can remember, and started quilting as an expectant mom twenty-three years ago. Fifteen years later, I made a college visit with that beautiful daughter. The date coincidentally fell on the same weekend of a large quilt show in the town where we were staying.

I saw some pieces there that later inspired the technique I ultimately developed.  Attempts were being made at the idea of quilted stained glass designs but they had what I call a "cutesier" and "quiltier" kind of feeling.

I wanted to make pieces that could be mistaken for actual stained glass windows.  During my first gallery opening in 2003, I saw a couple looking at my work and realized that they were quietly arguing.  Hung fairly high and out of reach, he was pointing at the work saying he thought they were fabric.  She was shaking her head to disagree, because she thought they had to be glass.

I remember thinking  "OK I did it!"

3. Who taught you the particular skills you use in your work?

I am self taught as a quilter and developed my own technique for the stained glass pieces.

4. When did you start selling your work?

I sold my first piece from the gallery about a month before the opening and another that night. From that point I have enjoyed more sales there as well as commission placements and now the opportunity for online sales with Etsy.

5. What is your favorite thing about your online shop?

I just really like the freedom and flexibility the Etsy format offers to create the shop and feature the pieces.  I have often said that I am "techno-challenged", but I was able to put the shop together with relative ease.

6. What is your favorite thing about what you sell?

First, it would be the "trompe l'oeil" or "fool the eye" effect of what I do.  Then there is the fact that I am a self proclaimed color freak .  I love the saturation and range of colors in the fabrics and the way the mottled black "lead came" makes them pop.

7. What is your favorite item in your own shop and why?

Wow, this is hard.  It is a bit like choosing between your children (and I only have  one).  I guess  "Fire Dancer" for the intense colors and the detail in the headpiece.

8. What teams do you belong to and what do you like most about them?

I am totally new to the team thing, but I was invited to join Design Style Guide and I am thrilled with the connection to other artists and the endless possibilities of promotion from the site.

9. What is the most fun thing you do to promote your shop?

Right now I am just enjoying looking at other shops and seeing how they are set up, and of course I love looking at the incredible art that people are producing.

10. What are some of your favorite finds by other online sellers?

Well of course I love everything fiber and I love "Diana's Mosaic Photo Art Quilts."

And I am really in awe of "Mysticsilks'" silk paintings.  But honestly, I have only scratched the surface of the amazing work offered [by Design Style Guide].

11. What do you do in your spare time?

Spare time??????  You are kidding, right?  Actually, my basic every day chores like grocery shopping, house cleaning, laundry... these are what I think of as work.

Pretty much every other waking moment is spent doing what I love... making my art.  Of course a large part of my process is the hand stitching of the "lead came" and I do some of that while watching TV with my hubby.  We love the various crime dramas that are so popular now.

12. Do you have anything else you would like to share?

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that has welcomed me to the team, or chosen one of my pieces for a treasury, and especially to Jay who has helped me in the techno-challenged department and offered to do this interview for the blog!

Not a problem, Lisa. I'm happy to help, and we're happy to have you on our team.
